Laser cladding & component repair

Start with the worn surface, material and dimensional requirements. Laser cladding applies alloy powder to a component using a laser beam; machining then brings the repaired area to the dimensions specified for the work.

Components and repair suitability

Enquiries may cover engine components, shafts and working surfaces. Material, cracks or other damage, previous repairs and remaining dimensions affect the repair decision. A listed application does not establish that every component is suitable for cladding.

  • Main and auxiliary engine piston ring grooves, including forged-steel and cast-iron components.
  • Piston rods, hydraulic cylinder rods, exhaust valve spindles and shaft journals.
  • Turbocharger rotors and blades; electric motor and alternator rotor journals.
  • Cast-iron cylinder-head surfaces, valve-seat pockets, flange surfaces and bearing seats.
  • Stern-tube liners; cylinder liners and other cast-iron items assessed by material and repair location.

From receipt to completion

The published repair workflow has six stages. Drawings, tolerances, component condition and agreed inspection requirements determine the work package for an individual repair.

  • 1. Receive the component and establish the requested repair scope.
  • 2. Pretreat: machine the fatigue layer, perform surface NDT, measure hardness and dimensions, and preheat as required by the procedure.
  • 3. Apply the cladding layer at the repair location, leaving a machining allowance.
  • 4. Machine or grind the overlay to the specified dimensions and tolerances.
  • 5. Inspect appearance, dye-penetrant indications, hardness and dimensions.
  • 6. Prepare the repair and inspection report and confirm delivery requirements.

Procedure documents and project scope

Available documentation includes DNV-approved laser cladding WPS GOMOLCR-1 / Rev 0. Its material, workshop and process conditions must be checked against the proposed work and any class requirements.

Laser cladding, general component reconditioning, motor rewinding and generator repair are distinct activities. Please identify the required repair so that approval of one procedure is not mistaken for approval of every component or repair method.
